README
Project Amp
Amplitude (Harmonix, 2003) for PlayStation 2, running natively on Windows.
Project Amp is a static recompilation: the game's PS2 program is translated into C++ ahead of time and compiled into a Windows application, alongside a runtime that stands in for the console's hardware (graphics, sound, video, controllers, memory card, disc, network). It is built with PS2Recomp, the PlayStation 2 static recompiler by ran-j and contributors.
You need your own copy of Amplitude (USA, SCUS-97258): the disc in a DVD drive, or an
.isomade from it. This repository contains no game data and no game code. The downloads hold the recompiled program; the music, graphics, video and text are all read from your disc.
Features
- Play from your own disc or an ISO. The first start plays like a console (Sony logo, intro movie). After that, a launcher opens with the game already waiting at its title screen.
- Sharper picture: internal resolution up to 8x, a wider view that fills any screen shape (16:9, 16:10, ultrawide) with the menus kept in shape, and windowed, borderless or exclusive fullscreen modes.
- Smooth, responsive play: VSync locked to your display (60 to 240 Hz, aware of G-SYNC/FreeSync panels), and 1 kHz controller polling.
- The original sound: the PS2's sound chip and Harmonix's synth are modelled register by register, with reverb and effects. Levels and timing are checked against PCSX2.
- Online play through the PS Rewired revival service.
- Controllers: PlayStation, Xbox, Switch Pro and most others, with rumble and remapping. The PC keyboard acts as the PS2's USB keyboard for typing names and chat.
- Bring your saves from PCSX2 memory cards and from real-PS2 formats (MemCard PRO, SD2PSX, Open
PS2 Loader,
.psu,.max,.cbs,.sps/.xps,.psv). - A settings menu (F1) for display, audio, controls, and the game's own cheats.
Download and play
Get the latest build from Releases:
Project-Amp-<version>-Setup.exe: an installer. Saves and settings go to%APPDATA%\Project Amp.Project-Amp-<version>.zip: portable. Unzip anywhere; saves stay in itsuserdatafolder.
Requirements: Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), a graphics card with OpenGL 3.3, and your Amplitude (USA) disc or ISO. A controller is recommended.
First start: pick your DVD drive or your .iso. F1 opens the settings, Alt+Enter
toggles fullscreen, and Esc quits (it asks first). The README.txt included with the download
covers everything else, from save import to troubleshooting.
Build from source
The build also needs your own disc: it reads the game's executable (SCUS_972.58) and generates
the game code on your machine. You need Windows, Visual Studio 2026 with C++, CMake and Python 3.12.
The first full build takes about 20 minutes.
Step-by-step guide: Amplitude/README.md
How it works
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
ps2xRecomp | Translates the game's main-CPU (MIPS R5900) code into C++: about 13,000 functions, generated from your disc |
Amplitude/tools | Translates the game's VU1 vector-unit microcode into native SIMD code, plus analysis tools |
ps2xRuntime | The runtime: GS graphics (CPU and GPU renderers), VIF/GIF, IPU video, the SPU2 sound chip and Harmonix synth, disc access, saves, settings, launcher |
ps2xIOP | The I/O processor's services: the synth, online networking, memory card, USB keyboard |
Amplitude/ | This game's recompiler configuration, the hand edits to generated code (as patches), scripts and release packaging |
