Legend of Legaia Recompiled brings Legend of Legaia to PC.

README

Legend of Legaia Recompiled

Community Windows playtest build for Legend of Legaia (USA), built with psxrecomp.

[!WARNING] This is an early playtest build, not an official release. Keep your original saves backed up and report reproducible problems with a location, action, and crash report where possible.

What has been tested

  • Field, town, and world-map traversal
  • Cutscenes and FMVs
  • Saving and loading through the in-game memory-card screen
  • Standard attacks, combo chains, items, Spirit, Hyper Arts, and summons
  • Muscle Dome, Sol Fever Disco, Baka Fighter, Wild Card slot machine, and fishing
  • The optional runtime debug overlay and the retail in-game developer menu

What you need

This project cannot provide any Sony or game data. You must supply your own legally dumped North American copy of the game and a legally dumped US PS1 BIOS.

  • SCUS_942.54 from the USA game disc
  • The matching USA disc image as a .cue + .bin pair
  • SCPH1001.BIN (US PS1 BIOS)

Setup

  1. Download and extract the latest LegaiaRecomp-windows-x64-v*.zip from Releases.
  2. Place the extracted SCUS_942.54 at disc\\SCUS_942.54.
  3. Put the matching .cue and .bin in game\\. The cue file must be named Legend of Legaia (USA).cue or update game.toml to match it.
  4. Put your BIOS at bios\\SCPH1001.BIN.
  5. Run Run LegaiaRecomp.bat. You can also double-click LegaiaRecomp.exe; the release build loads its bundled game.toml automatically.

The game creates virtual memory cards in saves\\. Back up that folder before trying experimental builds.

Steam Deck / Proton

The package is a Windows x64 build, not a native Linux build. It can be used through Steam Proton; the release executable contains the required Legaia CD response-timing default, so Proton users do not need to invoke the Windows batch launcher.

  1. In Steam Desktop Mode, add LegaiaRecomp.exe as a non-Steam game.
  2. In that shortcut's Properties > Compatibility, force a current Proton build (Proton Experimental or Proton GE are reasonable starting points).
  3. Launch LegaiaRecomp.exe from Steam. Keep the supplied bios, disc, game, and saves folders beside it exactly as described above.

This is Proton guidance, not a claim of native-Linux support. Please report your Proton version, Steam Deck OS version, renderer, location/action, and a diagnostic snapshot or crash report if a problem occurs.

Diagnostic capture

The runtime keeps a small, bounded diagnostic history enabled by default. A severe short hitch automatically preserves the recent history as psx_hitch_report.json beside the executable. This is intended to catch brief item, Spirit, Art, summon, FMV, and field pauses that recover before the older full-freeze detector fires.

You can also preserve a report manually immediately after a problem:

  • Keyboard: Ctrl + F12
  • Controller / Steam Deck: Select + L3 + R3

Manual capture writes psx_manual_snapshot.json and asks the rolling recorder to preserve psx_hitch_report.json. Reports are bounded and overwritten rather than accumulated indefinitely. They contain runtime diagnostic state, not game, BIOS, disc, or save payloads.

Debug tools

Press F10 to toggle the external runtime overlay, then press Tab until the WARP panel is shown. Press Enter there to activate Legaia's in-game DEBUG MODE; its full-screen black developer screen will appear.

After DEBUG MODE has been activated, the more convenient compact field cheat/developer menu can be opened in a normal field/town state with Select + Triangle (Xbox Select + Y). Press F10 again at any time to toggle the external runtime overlay back on. From its WARP panel, F also launches Fishing through the same retail transition used by a fishing pond and returns to the prior field or town on exit.

Reporting a problem

Open an issue with the release version, your Windows or Proton environment, location/action immediately before the problem, whether it is repeatable, and any psx_crash.txt, psx_last_run_report.json, psx_hitch_report.json, or psx_manual_snapshot.json produced beside the executable.

Do not upload game images, BIOS files, or copyrighted extracted game assets.

Credits

  • mstan/psxrecomp and its contributors
  • SamSteProjects/psxrecomp, the Legaia runtime fork
  • Andrew Altimit / legend-of-legaia-re for the detailed reverse-engineering documentation that mapped Legaia's streamed overlays, their load behavior, and their game systems. That work directly guided the overlay identification, validation, and cache-correctness fixes used by this playtest build.
